Unfortunately, teachers today need to prove that they are competent and that that they hold a position of high integrity.
High quality teachers are high quality people. It is important to carefully select the proper person for any teaching position. Teachers must have the proper knowledge, skills and attitudes to be successful in connecting with students. They must be upstanding citizens and life long learners.
Teachers must also accept that they are learners. Students can not achieve high levels of learning unless teachers, principals and other school employees are continuously learning. I often encourage teachers to try to learn something from their students such as technology skills. Usually the students understand new technology before the teachers. The future of education is one focused on the learning process and less on learning the content.
Teachers should set high expectations for their students and their learning.
Teachers should display positive and enthusiastic attitudes everyday because they are the everyday roll models for so many students.
Teachers are motivated through their students. When the student finally understands or crosses hurdles of learning, the teacher finds great satisfaction in a job well done. It is these moments that validate the choice to be a teacher.
